China’s Internet of Vehicles Industry Has Entered a New Stage of Application and Practice

source:People’s Posts and Telecommunications News time:2023-01-20

In the past five years, driven by policies, China’s Internet of Vehicles industry has made remarkable achievements in the key technology research, standard system construction, infrastructure deployment, application service promotion, and security system construction. Through unremitting efforts, the industry community has jointly explored a practical path for the integration and innovative development of new generation of information and communication technology with Chinese characteristics and the automobile, transportation and other industries.

According to the "Internet of Vehicles White Paper (2022)" released by China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, China’s Internet of Vehicles industry has experienced a development stage in which the information and communication industry relies on 5G, C-V2X direct-connected communication, AI and other technological innovations to push forward the test, verification and application demonstration of the Internet of Vehicles, and the “integration and innovation of the Internet of Vehicles industry ecology” has basically formed. At present, it has entered a new stage of small-scale deployment and pilot application practice of the Internet of Vehicles guided by the actual application demand and market development trend of the automobile and transportation industries.

The development practice of China’s Internet of Vehicles industry has achieved certain results. The technological innovation ability of “vehicle-road-network-cloud” has been greatly improved, and the industrialization has been fully accelerated. The standard system jointly issued across industries has been initially established, and has a significant effect on the industry. Infrastructure construction is accelerated and large-scale deployment is carried out in typical areas. The integrated deployment of 5G and C-V2X direct-connected communication has completed the intelligent transformation of more than 5,000 kilometers of roads. The total number of 5G base stations is 2.22 million, and the number of industrial virtual private networks is more than 7,900. Telecom operators are exploring the key technology solutions of 5G network for the application of the Internet of Vehicles. All kinds of application exploration have blossomed, and the enabling effect has continued to strengthen.

The development achievements of China’s Internet of Vehicles industry are jointly promoted by the coordinated development of the industry. First of all, we should establish a top-level coordination mechanism to break the barriers of cross-industry development. Top plans such as the Action Plan for the Development of the Internet of Vehicles (Intelligent Connected Vehicles) Industry have promoted cross-industry integration and innovation. Secondly, we should jointly promote cross-industry organizations to carry out technological innovation and test verification. Finally, we should encourage people to try first and create new models. A number of typical applications have been formed through the construction of a pilot development environment such as Intelligent Connected Vehicle Demonstration Area, Internet of Vehicles Pilot Area, and Double Smart” Pilot City.

The white paper shows that the coordinated development of intelligent Internet is the strategic direction of the future Internet of Vehicles industry. China adheres to the coordinated development of intelligence and networking as the main line, promotes in-depth integration and innovation across industries, pushes forward the coordinated construction of cross-regional infrastructure, takes large-scale deployment of multi-dimensional and high-value applications as the traction, and strives to build a new advantage in the second half of the high-quality development of the Internet of Vehicles industry.

In the future, challenges and opportunities coexist in China’s Internet of Vehicles industry. In cross-industry integration, there are still challenges in technology route selection, infrastructure deployment, application promotion and others. It is necessary to strengthen collaboration between cross-industry competent departments and cross-industry organizations, and encourage collaborative research and development between cross-industry enterprises. In cross-regional infrastructure collaborative construction, there are still challenges of business continuity and business data interoperability. We should form a logical “one network” system architecture, implement standardized construction schemes, and combine construction with operation. In application scenario value, there are still challenges such as the scale effect of the scenario is not strong, the value of the scenario is not yet closed loop, and the data value needs to be explored. The multi-dimensional value space of the application scenario should be deeply explored, the foundation of the data space of the Internet of Vehicles should be consolidated, and the integrated application of automobile, transportation, city and other fields should be explored.

The current security protection requirements for the Internet of Vehicles are increasing, and the security level of different enterprises is uneven. The safety of the Internet of Vehicles is the key to the healthy development of the industry. In the future, we should attach equal importance to safety and development. It is necessary for the government, industry and enterprises to build a comprehensive safety protection system with safety supervision as the support and safety technology as the core to realize the overall joint prevention and control across departments, industries and regions.
